What weird stuff do you eat??
I'm known for eating weird food. I'm like Mikey from that cereal commercial - I'll try anything!
I'm over the phase of the strained yogurt (if you put regular plain yogurt into a strainer lined with cheesecloth over night, you get a completely different texture - it's more like Greek yogurt or cheese). I had a great run with frozen dumplings from Chinatown, but now I just go to Chinatown for Dim Sum. I'm still way into steel cut oatmeal, but I haven't made it lately so it didn't make the photo. Sorry oatmeal!
The picture shows my latest weird food obsessions. On the left is Flaxseed - I grind it in a coffee grinder and add to salads or cereal. The center is Kefir, which is like a thick pourable yogurt. Kefir makes awesome smoothies, I guess it's been in the news a lot lately for being pretty good for you. And on the right is my beloved quinoa, a delicious substitue for rice or other starch/grains at dinner.
I'm a little adventurous when it comes to food - I'll try anything once (as long as it's not spicy, lamb, or some weird animal).
So what's weird in your fridge?
Cheers,
Lara

I love oatmeal! I eat with flaxseed meal for breakfast every morning.
I'm the "weird hippie" coworker in the office - I take vitamins, drink tea, eat sprouts and avocadoes with my salads (my coworker didn't know what an avocado looked like). My other "weird" foods are Wasa crisps with herring, smoked salmon, plain yogurt, whole-wheat anything, more "adventurous" fruits and vegetables, and I had a wheatgerm phase for a while.
I guess trying to be healthy is a "weird" thing to some people!
For the past couple of months I've been drinking a protein/colon cleanse/flaxseed oil/banana/frozen fruit shake for breakfast. It's not bad and keeps the juices flowing. Otherwise during the day I'm boring.
MR hit the nail right on the head... trying to be healthy is weird to many people.
Staples in my house... I keep wheat germ and flax seed in my fridge, which I put on plain nonfat yogurt with frozen berries. I keep lecithin on hand because I bake my own whole-wheat breads and that prolongs the shelf life, but it's also good for you. I have Veggie Slices cheese in my fridge right now because it was on sale and I thought I would try them. Pretty good melted into a homemade panini, kind of weird plain. I also keep steel-cut oats, quinoa, oat bran, brown rice, wheat berries, barley, etc. on hand.
But you won't find any white flour products in my house!
My husband and I try to eat pretty healthy and the stuff that everyone has named I don't find particularly odd. Although, I grew up eating "weird" food so it's not a new concept to me. Goat and goat products (we lived in Turkey for two years); and I LOVE weird veggies such as artichoke and avocado but hate "normal" veggies such as cauliflower and brocolli. My dad had me eating wheat germ when I was still a young teenager.
Healthy/wierd foods are the norm for my fridge. My birthday cake for my 6th or 7th year was a type of - from what I recall - 167 grain doorstop of a mound with Tahini Butter as icing. It required lots of water to digest, and needless to say, my parents were very health conscience. Now I stock my own fridge, so it's balanced with Kiefer (Peach = yum!), too much cheese to justify, homeade Hummus, Olives, dry yeast and lots of veggies. My freezer stays stocked with Ice Cream!
I enjoy olive spead on breads or crackers.
I wish I knew where I could get this stuff in Louisiana! I'm here in college from Europe, and I used to love Kefir (it is great for you and helps you lose/maintain weight), but I haven't seen it anywhere around here. Do you have to go to some specialty organic store to get it?? Healthy food is not too popular down here =[
Lizzy - Kefir is kind of new to us Americans...I'd try health food stores, many college areas have those! Good luck!
I love vanilla ice cream with lays potato chips mixed in it.Yummy.very unhealthy I'm sure, but hey, I've loved this since I was a kid, like 500 years ago.
I have always liked fried bologna. Sick I know....
But I have not had it in a long time.
: )
I LOVE peanut butter & jelly with crushed lays potato chips. YUM! And popcorn & sour cream (like a dip - sorry, happened when I was pregnant with my 12 year old, and she loves it too!)
I have actually tried sliced granny smith apples wrapped in canadian maple ham and dipped in caramel...i don't know where that came from either.
I loved seeing what you all said! I was doing wheat germ, Kefir, Brewer's yeast shakes, vites, etc since I was 13. Now I will try anything once. Had a bite of a friend's Beef tongue sandwich yesterday. (I can hear you all groaning in disgust from here!) It tasted delish. I love Thai, dark chocolate, veggies, shell fish, on and on.
My specialty is to take yummy fattening/unhealthy foods and change the recipe to make them healthier and still delicious and satisfying.
Contributed to one cookbook already and gathering recipes for my own cookbook.
I like a piece of dark chocolate every night before I go to sleep.
