The "SECRET" to Bathing Suit Shopping...
Lara wrote she is having a time with jeans. c.a. Marks commented that it's BATHING SUIT SEASON!!
In the next seven days, I will be venturing into a mall for the first time since I think September. And I will be looking for a bathing suit. And I'm afraid. Very afraid.
BUT, I have a strategy, I'm using THE SECRET.
ASK. BELIEVE. RECEIVE.
I'm gonna ASK for that PERFECT suit to be there at the second store (why be greedy?) I waltz into.I'm gonna BELIEVE it will be there and it will be wonderful (on me).
And, I'm gonna bring it up to that cash register and RECEIVE it legally.
But, WHERE should I go? Where do you find your best bathing suit? or bathing suit selection???
Say a little prayer for me. I'll do the same for you if you need it.
(and I'm slathering on the self tanning lotion as we speak...)
Cheers! Heidi

Heidi, you are so brave!! I've always heard that JCrew suits are great. I saw some cute suits at Old Navy when I was on the hunt for jeans. Good luck!
Khols is having a big bathing suit sale
Ooooh, let me know where you go to buy your swimsuit! I dread it sooo much. I'll probably go into the mall for this purchase. I know my past experiences with Wal-Mart swimswear. Oy! LOL Time to try something new, something different. Keep us posted and I'll keep you posted. ;-) I LOVE your blog by the way.
J.Crew seems to work for NYC models who only need a bit of flimsy lycra.... I need more fabric, more structure, and more design....and now more "support" shall we say???(although their suits look very suave on the hanger!!)
Kohls is a great idea, and even nearby...thanks for the idea "b" -- and I wish I had the time for your 'services '-- personal trainer!! you must have a lot more fun bathing suit shopping!
I usually buy my suits from either department stores or swimsuit stores, mainly because they have the best selection of separates - for some reason my top and bottom aren't the same size. :) I don't know if you have a Winners there, but they often have a good variety of different suits.
I have the best luck out of the Lands End catalog believe it or not--and I can buy a couple, try them on in front of MY mirror, by MYSELF and return what doesn't thrill me...
Heidi, I too need the "support" and the Lands End ones have a bra-type support across the mid back if you're looking one-piece.
Good luck!
Venus Swimwear has fabulous bra tops in a style the lifts and enhances (in patterns that look fresh and not frumpy). Google for their website. BTW, I bought and watched the SECRET after my friend in LA told me how incredible it was - didn't get a whole lot from it, but found this: abraham-hicks.com Similar, and yet a whole lot better ...for me anyway. Check it out if you have a chance. Without spending any $$ on the seminars or books they're trying to sell, I got such a lift just reading all of the info provided - even printed out some quotes to hang on my office walls!
Good luck in your quest to be in tip top shape, and in finding the perfect suit!
I have had a lot of luck with Old Navy.com. They have different suits online. Some that you can only buy online. I have to shop in the women's plus category but I've seen nice suits in the regular women's section. I have 3 old navy suits and they are very well constructed. They flatter my figure just as well as some of those $80-$100 swimsuits.
Like Michell, I shop for swimsuits out of the Lands End Catalog and try them on in the privacy of my own home. They even have suits designed for various problem areas and people besides skinny models actually look good in them.
I don't remember when it was the last time I actually bought a swim suit in a "store".
I pretty much get my suits from lands End
I have bought most of my bathing suits from Victorias Secret... if thier bras and panties fit, the bikinis will be perfect! I also recently bought the hottest suit I've ever owned from Saks. Yes, it cost $150, but I believe that it's worth spending more if you'll have confidence while wearing that little fabric.
wow - how do you size it from a catalog? lots of $ spent on returns??
I have so wanted to buy a Lands End suit -- but I have to try a bunch on!!!
Honestly, Heidi--you don't have to try a ton on. I don't think I've ever returned one. They are true to size and give great explanations of what type of cup they have, what "flaws" they hide, etc. Everyone I've bought looks good on me and I've had 2 back-to-back kids. Last summer the youngest was only 3 months old, so you know how I was looking forward to bathing suit season. I bought 3 Lands End suits and they all looked great on me.
I was shopping in Urban Outfitters in DC (near the Verizon Center). EVERYTHING I tried on made me look like a rock star!
Needless to say I bought alot. If all stores paid attention to the fitting room lighting/ambience they'd sell more.
Heidi,
Try checking out smaller independent swimwear shops...I've moved cities, but in my old city, there was an AMAZING little swimwear/activewear shop in my neighbourhood. The woman was great! She had amazing fabrics! You pick your fabric, colour and swimwear design. She took my measurements, and made each piece to fit ME. No more pick out a size 8 and hope it fits in all the right places!!
She had different pricing for different styles and fabrics. In the end I paid under $75 for a 2 piece bathing suit. One that was made for ME and different from any I've seen! Now I try to travel back there every year to get a new suit!
After not going out in public in a bathing suit for 3 years (big time weight gain), I went with a friend to a store called Water Water Everywhere. Their site is everythingbutwater.com. The girl working there wasn't a talking toothpick so she understood my situation. She brought me several suits to try and she said she wants to see every one of them! She said if I think something doesn't fit right, too loose, no support, etc. that she can fix it! She brought out this little green , plunging neckline one piece, I thought "No way, this is way too sexy" but I put it on anyway and OMG it was incredible! I haven't felt that great in a long time. I think when looking for a bikini, see someone who understands your body type and what looks flattering. I won't be covering up in those ugly skirt bottoms. I have big thighs and a booty, but I'm sure I'm not going to be the biggest girl on the beach and I just want to feel good and make my hubby want me! =) Happy shopping!
I have big thighs and booty and DO NOT have issues when donning by skimpy two piece bathing suit. I used to have a full-figured one and BF said "Don't be embarrased to show your stuff, you have a LOVEEEEELY ASS!!" I'm not going back to the full one.
