Is This Art?

I am one of the odd folks who feels art takes talent. If you can't paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with figures that look at least similar to real people or real things - then nope, not artist.

Modern Art? Not Art.

Picasso? Not an Artist.

Brought to us by the man who dyed icebergs red (pink).....
marco_iceberg.jpg
(ewww- remember why they took away the red m&ms?!!)

And the man who invited people to press "blend" on these poor souls:

goldfish_blender.jpg

He is Marco Evaristti, and his latest project????

Meatballs fried in the oil he removed from his body in a liposuction procedure.

Mmmm Mmmm GOOD!

Canned for your dining pleasure --- only $4,000 a can!!!

He says "You are not a cannibal if you eat art"

Um, nope, not art in my book. BUT, GENIUS PR man, GENIUS business man. He convinces people with lots of money to give him money for his "art." Why didn't I think of that?????

Cheers! Heidi

One of the ongoing debates on ChickChat is "what IS art?" Heidi and I rarely agree on what art is - my philosophy has always been that art is defined by intention and you can find "art" in anything. But this Marco dude inspired me to amend my definition when he started blending up goldfish. Now, I'd add that something's art as long as no one or thing was killed to create it. Thanks for the enlightenment, Mario! That goldfish blender thing is not art - it's FISH MURDER!!! Where's PETA when you need them??

No don't think so. I think it's a way to generate buzz and $. Reminds me of what teenage boys sit around dreaming up, what they would do if they had a chance. Gee let's put some fish in a blender and dare someone to flip the switch. Even worse is that these are adults and some idiots are paying $ to do this? I'm all for artistic expression just as long as it's not harmful. Is dye in the ocean really a good idea don't we already have enough junk in it? Sound we even go into the fat thing? That just turns my stomach.. cannibal much? EWWWWW!

I hate when people say it's not art all because it isn't pretty. It just shows a lack of intelligence and a lack of knowledge on their part.

The thought of blending goldfish makes me throw up a little in my mouth. Remember "Duece Bigalo"? The scene where he blends the fish? Totally gagged the whole time.

I'm ok with art being abstract. I'm ok with sculptures. I'm not ok with "life as art" or stuff like that - or stuff like this! Ew - eating meatballs fried in the fat of someone's body is just disgusting. Maybe the person who eats it will get the human form of BSE!

Art has so many different definitions. The Impressionists were alieneted for deviating from the norm, but we now considered Impressionism to be very beautiful and the gold standard in what art is supposed to be. Art is not just about drawing something that looks like something, it goes beyond that. Art pushes boundaries, pushes ideas and makes you think about things you would normally not think twice about. Look at how Christo and Jean-Claude turned Central Park into a gigantic living sculpture. It is amazing. Art can also be about making you disgusted. Evaristti's meatballs tell me how gluttonous we are. We eat fried foods, then go and get liposuction to remove the fat we ingested only to keep repeating the cycle. I am not the artist, so I don't know if that was his intention to "say" that, but that's the real beauty of art.

And hot pink icebergs are hot.

well, although i'm not quite as strict on my definition of art, these things just don't make the cut. pressing 'on' on a blender with a fish inside is just cruel, and while dying an iceberg pink is clever, and perhaps is art, well... i don't know. i'd need a little more convincing. i do think that a canvas painted completely blue is art though, so maybe i'm being a little hypocritical? double-standard-ed?

still... i draw the line at sticking-live-things-in-a-blender.

No one said art had to be pretty. Art is individual expression true. However, there's a line between pushing an enevelope and being a responsible citizen. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't make me ignorant or uncultured... it means I disagree with the forum that someone is using in the name of art. Is this artist so enviornmentally aware and anguished by our gluttony that he is forced to express it in this manner? I think you maybe reading too much into that or projecting your own interpretation as to what the artist could mean on to it. Hey, again it's a free country. I think it's too far and it really isn't doing anyone any good other than generating buzz for the artist to make more $$. If they're so motivated to do good why raise awareness in the manner. Food for thought (and no I don't mean this guys meatballs).
