When's the last time you played a game?
Boston Guys' girls were with us last night (they're 13 and 9), and after we ate dinner, I couldn't bear the thought of camping out on the couch for another round of "What Can We Watch That Is Appropriate And/Or Interesting For All Of Us?" Because the answer is nothing - this one doesn't like Project Runway and this one doesn't like Dancing with the Stars and this one doesn't like sports. You get the idea.
So I suggested a game...and the 9-year-old picked Yahtzee, which I have never played. Ever. How sad is that? My family was more about Boggle, Uno, Scrabble, and Trivial Pursuit (in the early 80s, when there was ONE version). Wow, we played a lot of games - there was hardly any tv to watch together anyway - and we had fun, back in the olden days of the 70s!
We had a great time last night! The girls liked teaching me the game and the 13-year-old won. I felt a little bit like Laura Ingalls Wilder all grown up, but it was fun and I'm sure we'll finally put the stack of board games that are collecting dust in the corner to use.
What's your favorite old-school game to play? NO electronics allowed (that means no "scene it," people)!
Cheers, Lara

My hubby and I get a kick out of playing The Game of Life, the little cars with blue or pink stick people...getting your career by the spin of the wheel... we get really silly and laugh a lot while playing.
I enjoy a good Yahtzee game every now and then, but my true favorite will always be Monopoly (the old standard, not one of the weird themed ones).
BIG Yahtzee fan!
Also, Gin (the card game) which goes well with a gin & tonic, now that I think about it.
Hey there! I have to say I loved Chinese Checkers. Is that politically correct? I loved Asian Checkers. Boggle. Callah (remember that one?). Othello.
Scategories is one of my all time favorites. Luckily I have a couple friends who are not too cool for boardgames and get very competitive!
OOOOO - Jill- the pink stick people -- I still lust after collecting them! I always wanted my car overflowing.
And Chinese Checkers RULE BGS - I forgot about that game, I think "Santa Claus" will be bringin' that one this year.
AnneGlam - you ROCK for the Gin/Gin - love the idea....I think I'm instituting that also : )
I hadn't played a board game in ages and last weekend my b-friend and I played Monopoly for 2.5 hours and it was so much fun. I'm going to have to start playing board games more often!
My family played lots of games growing up. Uno, Yahtzee, The Game of Life....but I think my most favorite of all of the games we played was Aggravation (It's kinda like Sorry!). We would play for hours. But now, I haven't played a board game in at least 10 years, how sad.
We play games when my family gets together, and Scategories is the one that brings out the old sibling bickering. I am still smarting over the 1 point loss 3 years ago when "metal" as my "something cold" answer was regected. When you touch something metal it feels cold! Right?!?
new years eve 2005...my boyfriend, myself, my then 15 yr old son and his best friend all sat around my kitchen table and played Pokeman Monopoly from 7pm until well after midnight..
my boyfriend won...
I went bankrupt...
funny thing is my son got that game for Xmas when he was approx 9 yrs old and that was the first and last time he/we ever played it...
my fave as a kid was Payday...
the old school one in the bright green box...
a few weeks after new years this year, I ran out and bought the updated version, and it sux...I am keeping my eyes peeled for the oldschool version at garage sales and thrift stores..
and when I find it, I will have my best friend over and with a bottle of wine, play the game
fuck you
